What is Legionnaires' Disease?
It’s a deisease that is extremely similar to pneumonia and is caused by a Legionella bacteria and just like pneumonia it can be fatal.
It’s caused by inhaling in tiny droplets of water that are suspended in the air (it grows in purpose built water systems) that has been contaminated. It’s important to note, that, thankfully it cannot be passed from one person to another.
Who is at risk?
Everyone is susceptible to the disease.
Some of us are at a greater risk and more vulnerable to disease – for example:
Any water system has the potential to contain legionella bacteria, that’s why it’s important that your water systems are under the right conditions to prevent the bacteria from growing and spreading.
Certain conditions increase the risk: water temperatures between 20-45 °C, is an ideal environment for it to grow; and at that temperature it’s possible for water droplets to be generated and if so, they may be dispersed; water is saved and/or re-circulated; there are deposits which can encourage bacterial growth, such as rust, sludge, scale, organic matter and biofilms.
